Web Series

A web series is a scripted or unscripted narrative released in episodes, typically online or on a streaming platform rather than broadcast television. Episodes are often 10 to 30 minutes, though this varies widely. Web series range from independent passion projects to broadcaster-commissioned productions.

Versus a feature film or traditional TV: a web series spans multiple episodes, giving more room for character and story development than a single feature. It is typically produced on a smaller budget and shorter timeline than a broadcast TV series and distributed mainly through digital platforms.

Who commissions or funds web series:

  • A broadcaster or streaming platform commissioning the series directly

  • Brand sponsorship or branded content arrangements

  • Film and TV tax credit and grant programs

  • Independent or self-financing by the creators

A broadcaster commission typically means a built-in distribution channel and a defined budget from the outset.

Ambition Studios’ web series work: “It Doesn’t Show,” a web series/limited series commissioned by APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network), with founder Nason Markwell credited as producer.
